International women's Day
March 8th is celebrated as international
Women's Day today to show respect to the women. The day is a historic day for
two reasons. First of all, on march 8th 1857, a large number of factory workers
in the United States went to the streets to demand their economic and political
rights. The factory owners called the police who arrived and immediately
opended fire, engaging in blind repression. Secondly, in 1908, the same date of
March 8th once again a memorable date of struggle and fight. on this day in
Chicago capitalist bosses set fire to a textile factory where over a thousand
women worked. A very large number was terribly burnt and 120 died. This horrible
crime happened simply because the workers were demanding that the legal 8-hour
work day be respected. At that time women as well as men workers were working
in a terrible environment with little or not dignity at all. International
women's Day (IWD) celebrates women's achievements and calls for gender
equality. on this day, people honor the contributions of women in various
fields like politics, Science,
arts, economics and more. International women's
Day celebrates the fact that women around the world are united and has been
fighting to create an equal platform for all irrespective of gender
discrimination.
During world war 1, international women's Day
crossed the borders of America and reached Russia. In 1917 in Russia,
International Women's Day acquired great significance - it was the flashpoint
for the Russian Revolution on march 8th (Western calendar) women workers in
Petrograd held a mass strike and demonstration demanded Peace and
Bread, The strike movement spread from factory to factory and effectively
became in insurrection. However in 1922, in honor of the women's role on IWD in
1917, Lenin declared that March 8th Should be designed officially as Women's
Day. The united Nation declared the day as international women's Day in 1975.
Today we acknowledge that IWD gives us an
opportunity to draw attention to our own struggles for women's rights, to link
this with women's struggles world wide and to demonstrate international
Sisterly solidarity with working women everywhere.
