The National Martyrs' Memorial (locally known as Jatiyo Sriti Shoudho) is the most significant national monument in Bangladesh. Located in Savar, about 35 km northwest of the capital, Dhaka, it stands as a symbol of the nation's respect for the millions who sacrificed their lives during the 1971 Liberation War.
The monument is a masterpiece of Brutalist architecture designed by Syed Mainul Hossain. It consists of seven pairs of triangular walls (prisms) that create a unique aesthetic:
The Seven Stages: Each pair of walls represents a pivotal chapter in the history of the Bangladeshi independence movement:
The Language Movement (1952)
The United Front Election (1954)
The Constitution Movement (1956)
The Education Movement (1962)
The Six-Point Movement (1966)
The Mass Uprising (1969)
The Liberation War (1971)
Dimensions: The tallest point reaches 150 feet (46 meters). The structure is designed so that its appearance changes drastically depending on the angle from which it is viewed.
