English is one of the most important languages in the world today, and for a student of Bangladesh it is much more than just a subject in the examination. English is the language of higher education, of the internet, of business, and of communication with the whole world. A student who learns English well can read books on higher studies, use a computer with confidence, and dream of a good job at home or abroad. A letter to a friend describing the importance of learning English is one of the most common letter topics for Class 6, 7, 8, SSC and HSC students in Bangladesh. In this letter a student tells a friend, in simple and sincere words, why English is necessary in modern life and why it should be learned with care from an early age.
What Is a Letter About the Importance of Learning English
A letter about the importance of learning English is a personal letter, usually written to a friend. In such a letter, the writer shares his or her own thoughts about English and advises the friend to learn the language well. Letter to a Friend Describing the Importance of Learning English
Mirpur, Dhaka
28 October 2026
My dear Arif,
I hope you are well by the grace of Allah. I am also well. In your last letter you asked me about my studies, and I am glad to write to you about a subject that I think is very important for every student of our country. I want to tell you something about the importance of learning English.
English is an international language. It is spoken and understood in almost every country of the world. If you know English, you can communicate with the people of the outside world. Without English, a man is like a dumb person in a foreign country: he cannot express his ideas and feelings to others. In the modern world, no one can go far without English, because it is the language of education, business, diplomacy and international communication.
Most of the books on higher education are written in English. If a student wants to be a doctor, an engineer, a teacher or a scientist, he must read books written in English. The great books of the world, the famous novels, plays and poems, and the best works of science and philosophy are also written in English.
English is also necessary for higher studies abroad. Every year thousands of students from Bangladesh go to America, England, Canada and Australia for higher education, and all of them have to study in English. Without a good knowledge of English, it is impossible to get admission to a foreign university or to follow the lectures of foreign teachers.
A good job in our country and abroad also depends on English. The offices, banks, business firms and international organisations all want men who can speak and write good English. A student who knows English well can get a good job easily, while a student who does not know English falls behind in the race of life. The internet and computers have made English even more important: almost all the information on the internet is in English, and the international seminars and business meetings of the world are conducted in English.
So, my dear friend, you will agree with me that English is a necessity in modern life. It is the passport to higher education, good jobs and a bright future. I advise you to learn English with care and attention from now on. Read English books, newspapers and magazines regularly, practise speaking and writing English every day, and try to learn new English words. If you do this, you will surely do well in your examination and in your future life.
No more today. Please convey my regards to your parents and love to your younger brother.
Yours ever,
Sifat
Letter to a Friend Who Is Unwilling to Learn English
Mirpur, Dhaka
28 October 2026
My dear Tanvir,
I hope you are doing well. I received your letter a few days ago, and I was sorry to read that you think English is unnecessary and that Bengali is enough for us. You wrote that we are Bangladeshis, that our mother tongue is Bengali, and that we should not waste our time learning a foreign language. My dear friend, I love Bengali as much as you do, and I am proud of my mother tongue. But I must politely disagree with your opinion, because in the modern world English is a necessity, not a luxury.
Bengali is our mother tongue, and we should all love and respect it. But Bengali is spoken only in Bangladesh and in some parts of India. English, on the other hand, is spoken and understood in almost every country of the world. If you go to a foreign country for a job or for higher studies, you will not be able to communicate with anyone in Bengali. English is the only language that can help you there.
Think of your own future. You want to be a doctor, and you are a brilliant student. But all the medical books are written in English, and all the higher studies in medicine are conducted in English. How will you become a good doctor without knowing English? The same is true of engineering, teaching, science and every other profession. In our country, the best jobs in banks, offices and business firms are given to those who know English well. The interview is often held in English, and a candidate who cannot speak English is rejected at once.
The internet is another example. Today, all the knowledge of the world is available on the internet, and almost all of it is in English. If you do not know English, you cannot use a computer properly or learn anything from the internet. You will be left behind while the whole world moves forward.
My dear friend, learning English does not mean forgetting Bengali. We can love our mother tongue and learn English at the same time. English is like a window through which we can see the whole world. It will open the doors of higher education, good jobs and a bright future for you. I earnestly request you to change your mind and start learning English from today. Read English books and newspapers, practise speaking English with your friends, and learn five new English words every day.
Please think over my words seriously. I am writing this letter only because I want to see you succeed in life. I hope you will take my advice in the right spirit.
With best wishes,
Sifat

Importance of Learning English Letter Writing Tips for the Examination
Memorise the format first. Learn the position of the sender's address, the date, the salutation and the signature by heart, because a wrong format loses marks even if the body is good.
Write the date in full. Always write the date as "28 October 2026" and not in short form, and place it just below the sender's address.
Keep the language simple and correct. Use short, simple sentences that you are sure of. A few correct sentences are better than many sentences full of grammatical mistakes.
Cover the main points. Include the international importance of English, higher education, good jobs, the internet and computers, and higher studies abroad. Examiners look for these points.
Keep the letter of a suitable length. For SSC and HSC, the letter should be about 200 to 250 words. A very short letter loses marks, and a very long one wastes time.
Practise writing the letter from memory. Write the full letter at home at least three or four times before the examination so that you can finish it quickly and correctly in the hall.
Revise before you submit. After finishing the letter, read it once more and correct the spelling, punctuation and capital letters. A clean, error-free letter always gets a higher mark.
