(What is a TIN Certificate?)
(Why People Cancel Their TIN)
(Who Can Apply for TIN Cancellation?)
(Business Permanently Closed)
(Duplicate TIN)
(TIN No Longer Needed)
(Income Below Taxable Limit)
(Living Abroad Long-Term)
(Death of the Taxpayer)
(How to Cancel TIN Certificate Online)
ঠিকানা: incometax.gov.bd।
(How to Apply for TIN Cancellation Offline)
(TIN Cancellation Application Sample)

(The "3 Years of Zero Returns" Claim)
(TIN Cancellation Fee and Timeline)
(What Happens After TIN Cancellation?)
(Things to Consider Before Cancelling)
(Common Mistakes to Avoid)
How to Cancel TIN Certificate in Bangladesh (English Version)
Many people obtain a TIN certificate for various needs, but later they no longer need it. While the TIN stays active, filing income tax returns and other tax formalities can become a burden. Failure to file returns on time may even create legal problems. However, subject to fulfilling certain conditions, you can apply to the National Board of Revenue (NBR) for TIN cancellation. This guide explains the TIN certificate cancellation rules, the online and offline application processes, the required documents, a sample application letter, and what happens after cancellation — step by step.
One thing must be clear from the start: cancelling a TIN certificate is not a one-click job. Submitting an application does not cancel the TIN — the concerned tax circle verifies the application, and only then is cancellation recommended or approved. Until the cancellation is final, it is safe to keep filing returns as per the rules. Every step in this post is based on NBR's e-TIN portal, The Daily Campus report of 26 October 2026, and the standard process followed by tax circles. Where a fact could not be verified — such as a specific fee or timeline — it is stated plainly, so that you do not apply on the basis of wrong information.
What Is a TIN Certificate?
The Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN) is a unique identification number assigned to a taxpayer. In Bangladesh, this number is used for various income-tax-related work of individuals and organisations. At present, a 12-digit number is issued as e-TIN. The TIN plays an important role in identifying tax files, filing returns, and various financial and official activities.
A TIN certificate is commonly needed for opening a bank account, taking a loan, applying for a visa, running a business, obtaining a trade licence, buying land or flats, registering a vehicle, and many other official purposes. Many people obtain a TIN for these reasons. But when the need ends, the TIN stays active, and questions about tax obligations arise. That is when cancellation becomes relevant.
Why Do People Cancel Their TIN?
Having a TIN does not mean everyone pays the same amount of tax. Tax liability is determined by income, assets, and the applicable law. Even so, an active TIN carries an annual return-filing obligation, and failure to file on time risks penalties and legal complications. People whose TIN serves no purpose anymore apply for cancellation to be free of this annual burden.
Common reasons include a permanently closed business, a TIN obtained for a one-time purpose that has ended, income falling below the taxable limit, long-term residence abroad with no taxable income in Bangladesh, a duplicate TIN created by mistake, and the death of the taxpayer, in which case the heirs want the TIN closed.
Before deciding, consider your current income, assets, business, and future needs. Cancelling a TIN only to avoid the hassle of filing returns is not wise. In future you may need a TIN again for a bank loan, credit card, visa, or business.
Who Can Apply for TIN Cancellation? (6 Situations)
Not everyone can cancel a TIN certificate simply because they want to. Cancellation can be applied for only in specific situations and subject to fulfilling legal conditions. According to The Daily Campus report, there are six situations in which an application may be considered.
1. Business or institution permanently closed. If a person or organisation permanently closes a business and the TIN is no longer needed, an application for cancellation can be made. Proof of closure must be submitted, such as a copy of the cancelled trade licence or a declaration of closure. A verbal claim is not enough; written proof is required. Even after closure, any tax liability from earlier years may need to be settled first.
2. Duplicate TIN created by mistake. If more than one TIN was issued in the same person's or organisation's name by mistake, you can apply to cancel the extra one while keeping the one you need. Mention both TIN numbers in the application — which one you want to keep and which one to cancel. Check twice before applying; cancelling the wrong one by mistake can cause serious trouble later.
3. TIN no longer needed. If a TIN was obtained for a specific purpose and that purpose has ended, and the legal conditions are fulfilled, an application for cancellation can be made. For example, a TIN taken for a visa or a one-time official task, where there is now no taxable income and no TIN-dependent work. A reasonable cause and supporting documents must back the claim.
4. Income below the taxable limit. If a person's income falls below the taxable limit, there may be scope for TIN cancellation under certain conditions. But low income or no taxable income does NOT cancel a TIN automatically — this is the most misunderstood point. You must apply and obtain the authority's approval. Stopping return filing without applying creates a penalty risk instead.
5. Living abroad for a long time. A Bangladeshi citizen living abroad for a long time, with no taxable income in Bangladesh and no legal need to keep a TIN, may have an application considered. A passport copy, visa, or proof of residence abroad may be required. But if there is property, a bank account, or any other source of taxable income in Bangladesh, the situation is different — consult the tax circle first.
6. Death of the taxpayer. If a taxpayer dies, the TIN may need to be cancelled. The heirs must apply to the concerned authority with the necessary papers, such as the death certificate, succession certificate, and proof of the deceased person's TIN number. If a business or any activity continues in the deceased person's name, the related tax and legal matters must be checked first.
How to Cancel a TIN Certificate Online
Whether a TIN can be cancelled online is the most frequently asked question. In short: NBR's e-TIN portal is officially built for both registration and cancellation. The welcome message on the portal (incometax.gov.bd) reads: "Taxpayer's Identification Number (TIN) Registration / Cancellation". So an online route for cancellation applications exists on the portal. But after submission, the tax circle verifies the application; without the authority's approval, the TIN cannot be treated as cancelled.
Steps for the online application:
Step 1: Go to the e-TIN portal. Visit NBR's e-TIN portal at incometax.gov.bd. The e-TIN service link is also available from NBR's main website, nbr.gov.bd.
Step 2: Log in to your account. Log in with your user ID (TIN number) and password. If you forget your password, there is a recovery option through your mobile number. If you do not have an account, you will need to register first — but anyone who has a TIN usually already has an account.
Step 3: Find the cancellation option. After logging in, look for the TIN cancellation or de-registration application option on your dashboard. The menu names inside the portal may change over time, so look for an option related to "Cancellation" or "De-registration". If you cannot find it, contact your tax circle directly and follow the offline application process below.
Step 4: Fill in the application form. The application generally asks for the TIN number, personal or organisational identity, current status, and the reason for cancellation. Write the reason clearly and truthfully — mention whichever of the six situations above applies to you.
Step 5: Attach supporting documents. You may need to upload supporting papers, such as a copy of your National ID card, proof of business closure, or a death certificate. Scan the documents clearly so that verification is not delayed.
Step 6: Submit and follow up. After submission, the tax authority will verify the application. Additional information or documents may be requested. Keep an eye on the application status on the portal or contact your tax circle. Remember — submitting an application online is not cancellation itself; until approval, the TIN stays active and so does the return-filing obligation.
One important caution: many blogs describe specific button or menu names inside the e-TIN portal with step-by-step screenshots. But menu names and layouts inside the portal can change over time. So if a blog's screenshots do not match exactly what you see, do not panic — log in to the portal, look for the Cancellation option, and if you cannot find it, contact your tax circle.
How to Apply for TIN Cancellation Offline
If applying online is not possible — or if the tax circle asks for a written application even after an online submission — you must apply directly at the tax circle or tax authority office. In practice, the final decision comes from the tax circle in most cases, so know the offline steps well.
Step 1: Find your tax circle and taxes zone. Applications for TIN cancellation go to the Deputy Commissioner of Taxes (DCT) of your own tax circle. If you do not know your circle, the application may go to the wrong place. You can find your circle from the taxes zone and circle information printed on your TIN certificate, from the acknowledgement receipt of your previous income tax return, or from the list of tax zones and circles on NBR's website (nbr.gov.bd). If unsure, visit the nearest taxes zone office and ask with your TIN number.
Step 2: Write the application letter. Submit a written application to the Deputy Commissioner of Taxes, stating the reason for TIN cancellation. The letter must contain your full name, 12-digit TIN number, mobile number and National ID number; the name of your tax circle and taxes zone; the reason for cancellation, written clearly and briefly; a list of the documents attached; and the date and your signature. A sample letter is given in the next section.
Step 3: Attach the required documents. The documents that may be required include proof of the TIN certificate or TIN number (for everyone); a copy of the National ID card (for everyone); proof of closure of the business or institution, such as a copy of the cancelled trade licence (if the business closed); documents supporting the reason for cancellation (as applicable); proof of income tax return filing (as required by the authority); death certificate and succession certificate (if the taxpayer has died); passport copy and visa or proof of residence abroad (for expatriates); and details of both TIN numbers (in case of a duplicate TIN). Requirements may vary by situation, so confirm the document list from your tax circle before applying. Proof of returns for earlier financial years may also be asked for in some cases. The authority may verify that there is no outstanding tax in your name; if there is any due, it may need to be settled first.
Step 4: Submit and collect the acknowledgement. Submit the application and documents at the tax circle office. Get the receiving seal or signature on a copy of your application — this is your proof that you applied on a specific date, and it will be useful if any question arises later.
Step 5: Wait for verification and approval. The Deputy Commissioner of Taxes will examine your application. Additional information or documents may be requested, or you may be called to the circle office. If satisfied after verification, the authority will recommend suspension or cancellation of your TIN number. Without approval, the TIN cannot be treated as cancelled.
Step 6: Collect written proof of cancellation. Once the application is approved, get written confirmation of the cancellation from the authority. Collect the proof of cancellation if one is issued and keep it safe — it will be useful if any bank, visa office, or other authority asks about the TIN in future.
Sample Application Letter for TIN Cancellation
Below is a sample letter addressed to the Deputy Commissioner of Taxes. Fill in the blanks with your own information.
Date: ………………………
To,
The Deputy Commissioner of Taxes
Tax Circle: ……………… (write your circle number)
Taxes Zone: ……………… (write your taxes zone name)
Subject: Application for cancellation of e-TIN certificate.
Sir,
I beg to state that I, the undersigned, am a regular taxpayer of your taxes zone. My 12-digit TIN number is: ………………………….
I wish to cancel my TIN certificate for the following reason in the present circumstances:
(Write your reason here. For example: my business has been closed permanently / I currently have no taxable income / two TINs were issued in my name by mistake / I have been living abroad for a long time and I have no taxable income in Bangladesh.)
I have attached the necessary documents with this application. Considering my overall situation, I humbly request you to take the necessary steps to cancel the said TIN number.
Applicant,
(Your signature)
Name: ……………………………
Mobile: ………………………
National ID Number: ………………………
Attachments: (1) Copy of the TIN certificate (2) Copy of the National ID card (3) ……………………… (write the names of other documents as per your reason)
Adapt the sample to your own situation. In case of a duplicate TIN, mention both numbers — which one you want to keep and which one to cancel. If the taxpayer has died, the heir should state their identity and relationship and attach the death certificate.
The "3 Years of Zero Returns" Claim — What Is True?
The most repeated claim about TIN cancellation on the internet is that at least three consecutive financial years of zero returns must be submitted. This claim appears in identical words in several blogs and news portals. But caution is needed here.
The Daily Campus report states clearly: in some cases, proof of income tax return filing for earlier financial years may be requested, but it is NOT correct to assume that the same fixed number of years of zero returns is mandatory for everyone. In other words, the "3 years" figure could not be confirmed from any published NBR rule. It is a widely repeated idea in blogs, not a rule that applies to everyone.
So before applying, ask your tax circle how many years of return proof are needed in your case. Assuming "3 years" on your own may cause unnecessary delay, and submitting too few documents may send the application back.
One more important point on this subject: until the TIN is cancelled, keep filing returns every year as per the rules — zero returns if needed. Stopping returns after applying creates a penalty risk instead. Until the cancellation is approved, you are still treated as a taxpayer.
TIN Cancellation Fee and Timeline
Whether any fee is charged for a TIN cancellation application and how many days cancellation takes — for these two questions, no specific fee or fixed timeline was found in NBR's published information. So this post claims no fee and no timeline.
What can be said: submitting a TIN cancellation application generally involves no fixed government fee as far as is known — but confirm this from your tax circle. How long the process takes depends on whether your documents are complete, whether there is any outstanding tax, and the circle's verification process. If documents are incomplete or additional information is requested, it may take longer. After submitting the application, follow up regularly. If there is no response for a long time, contact the tax circle with your acknowledgement copy.
What Happens After TIN Cancellation?
Once the TIN cancellation application is approved, get written confirmation of the cancellation from the concerned authority. Collect the proof of cancellation if one is issued. But know clearly what changes after cancellation.
Outstanding dues do not disappear: Cancelling a TIN does not automatically end all earlier tax liabilities or dues. Any outstanding tax, return-filing liability, or legal complication from the period before cancellation may need to be settled. Cancellation does not erase the past.
Future return obligation: Whether there will be an obligation to file returns in future depends on the applicable law and the taxpayer's situation. After cancellation, there is generally no return-filing obligation against that TIN. But if the situation changes — for example, taxable income starts again — a new TIN may be needed.
If you need a TIN again: Whether you can use the old number or must take a new number if you need a TIN again in future will be determined by the authority's rules. Various sources say a cancelled TIN cannot be used again and a fresh TIN must be applied for. Confirm the rule for re-obtaining a TIN from your tax circle at the time of cancellation.
Keep the proof safe: Keep the written proof of cancellation carefully. If a bank, visa office, or any other authority asks about the TIN in future, this proof is your support.
Things to Consider Before Cancelling
Do not rush into a decision to cancel your TIN. Consider the following:
Bank loans and credit cards: If you use a bank loan or credit card, your TIN must stay active. After cancellation, you may face problems getting these services.
Future needs: Think about whether you may need a TIN in the next few years for a visa, business, land purchase, or any other work. Once cancelled, you will have to apply afresh.
Income prospects: Even if you have no income now, consider whether income may start in future.
Assets: If there is property or investment in your name, find out what the tax implications will be.
Expert advice: If in doubt, consult your tax circle or a tax expert. A wrong decision can cost more money and trouble later.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Do not stop filing returns without applying — that risks penalties; keep filing until the cancellation is approved. Do not assume the TIN is cancelled just because your income fell — low income does not cancel a TIN automatically; you must apply and obtain approval. Do not apply to the wrong circle — confirm your circle from your TIN certificate first. Do not submit incomplete documents — confirm the list from your circle and submit everything, or the application will come back. Do not assume the "3 years of zero returns" figure applies to everyone — ask your circle what is needed in your case. Do not forget to collect written proof of cancellation — without it, you will have no evidence if the TIN is questioned later. Do not apply without clearing outstanding tax — dues may cause the application to be rejected.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Can a TIN certificate be cancelled online? Yes. NBR's e-TIN portal (incometax.gov.bd) is officially built for both registration and cancellation. Log in to the portal and look for the cancellation application option. But the tax circle verifies the application, and only approval makes the cancellation effective. In many cases, a written application at the circle office is also required.
How much is the fee for TIN cancellation? No specific government fee was found in published information. Confirm the matter from your tax circle before applying.
How long does TIN cancellation take? No fixed timeline is published. It depends on whether your documents are complete, whether there is any outstanding tax, and the circle's verification process.
Does a TIN get cancelled automatically if there is no income? No. Even if income falls below the taxable limit, a TIN is not cancelled automatically. You must apply and obtain the authority's approval. Stopping returns without applying risks penalties.
Is it mandatory to submit 3 years of zero returns for TIN cancellation? Several blogs mention 3 years of zero returns, but no published rule confirms the same fixed number of years for everyone. Ask your tax circle how many years of return proof are needed in your case.

How do heirs cancel the TIN of a deceased taxpayer? The heirs should apply to the concerned tax circle with the death certificate, succession certificate, and proof of the deceased person's TIN number. Does cancelling a TIN clear earlier tax dues? No. Cancelling a TIN does not automatically end earlier outstanding tax or return-filing liabilities. Dues from before cancellation may need to be settled.
What if I need a TIN again after cancellation? You may need to apply for a new TIN as per the authority's rules — various sources say a cancelled TIN cannot be used again. Confirm the re-application rule from your tax circle at the time of cancellation.
Where do I submit the TIN cancellation application? To the Deputy Commissioner of Taxes (DCT) of your own tax circle. Find your circle and taxes zone from your TIN certificate or from the acknowledgement receipt of your previous return.
