The National Martyrs' Memorial (Bengali: Jatiyo Sriti Shoudho) is the ultimate symbol of Bangladeshi pride and resilience. Located in Savar, about 35 km northwest of Dhaka, it honors the millions who sacrificed their lives during the 1971 Liberation War, which led to the birth of Bangladesh.
Designed by architect Syed Mainul Hossain and completed in 1982, the monument is a masterpiece of symbolism:
The Seven Triangles: The structure consists of seven pairs of triangular walls. Each pair represents a significant chapter in the movement toward independence:
The Language Movement (1952)
The United Front Election victory (1954)
The Constitution Movement (1956)
The Education Movement (1962)
The Six-Point Movement (1966)
The Mass Uprising (1969)
The Liberation War (1971)
Geometric Illusion: The tallest triangle reaches $150 \text{ feet}$ (46 meters) but has the narrowest base. Because of this unique arrangement, the monument appears to change shape depending on which angle you view it from.
Materials: The main tower is made of concrete, while the surrounding pavements and structures are built from red brick, symbolizing the blood shed by martyrs.
